History

The tram tunnel was constructed in the early 1900s and operated for a little over 50 years. It enabled a continuous 12-minute journey between its northern and southern destinations while horse-drawn carriages used the road above. The tunnel was deepened when double-decker trams were introduced in the 1920s. During the 1930s, diesel buses and trolleybuses began replacing trams, and London's tram system was decommissioned in 1952. The second underground track, running beneath a canal and the active main line, carried empty steam carriages without passengers. It kept those movements from disrupting the busy main-line timetable. When it was no longer required, the track fell out of use around 20 years before filming.
