History

The building began as Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, the town's first hospital. Constructed in 1831, it operated for more than 130 years and gained new wings and medicated baths to increase patient capacity and broaden treatment. In 1965, the infirmary moved to new premises and Ramsden Technical College bought the site for £105,000, beginning teaching three years later. Additional blocks were built alongside the Victorian hospital structures. By the 1970s, more than 8,000 students attended what had become Huddersfield Technical College. It merged with Dewsbury College in 2008 to form Kirklees College, which moved to a new £70 million campus in 2013. The former complex was then left vacant. Most of it was later demolished for apartments, a supermarket and offices, while the listed infirmary was retained.
