History
Prudhoe Hall was built in 1870 as a grand Victorian mansion for a wealthy coal owner. The estate, which included gardens and a chapel, was bought in 1913 for conversion into a colony for people with learning disabilities. By the 1930s the colony housed more than 500 residents. It became Prudhoe and Monkton Hospital with the creation of the NHS in 1948 and continued to treat children and adults with learning disabilities. Expansion during the 1960s increased capacity to more than 1,500 patients. As large institutions were phased out, services were reduced during the late 20th century and the hospital closed in 1994.
