History
Built in the 1860s on the grounds of an ancient fort, the prison held both men and women. Its X-shaped plan contained more than 15 corridors of cells and could accommodate over 350 inmates. Four three-storey cell blocks extended from a central atrium, while the wider complex included a hospital, school, children’s block and chapels. The prison closed at the beginning of the 21st century for reasons the commentator could not establish.
