History

Built in the early 1800s, the property served as a country house for more than a century and passed through several wealthy owners. It became an orphanage in the late 1930s. During the Second World War, the children were evacuated and the building became a training school for nurses who went on to work in nearby hospitals. High maintenance costs and a record-low number of children led to the orphanage closing in the late 1950s. The building was then kept in good condition for another 35 years. Its grand corridors, open rooms, fireplaces, oak staircase and decorative bannisters survive from the house and orphanage periods.
