History

The site began as a woollen mill and was bought by the Avon India Rubber Company in 1890, with tyre production starting three years later. As demand grew, annual production reached 1.5 million tyres, and the complex supplied the military during both world wars. Closure was announced in October 2022 because the ageing plant was no longer competitive. The final tyre was produced in late 2023, ending a connection with Melksham that had lasted generations. By 2025, the factory had been sold to a local development company and many of its older buildings were being demolished.
