History

Ardeer once contained a vast explosives factory that manufactured dynamite and employed more than 13,000 people. The power station was built in the 1950s to supply electricity to the works, rather than to the national grid. Its three combustion boilers converted energy from coal into steam. The station had been vacant since the early 2000s but remained one of the most complete buildings on the industrial site. A separate control room served a smaller power station associated with another works and closed in the 1980s after about 20 years of use.
